The following is an overhaul for the human lineage option for the Reborn World campaign setting for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. This work-in-progress playtest content is compatible with current 5e rules. Character creation Ability Score bonuses and Languages have been moved into Backgrounds.
Humans are the most common form of sapient life on the planet, to the extent that “humanoid” has become a synonymous term to refer to all bipedal sapients of similar stature.
BIOLOGY
Broadly speaking humans lack any specialized adaptations to aid success in a particular field or environment. However they are spread across the entire planet and reproduce at a faster rate than most other humanoids, so their numbers and determination make them a force all the same. Their appearances tend to be quite varied, having a wide range of body shapes and sizes, pigmentation for skin and hair, and more.
Despite not being innately magical, humans have exhibited the propensity to undergo gigantomachia and become giants more often than most other types of person. This has led some researchers to hypothesize that magic may interfere with the processes that trigger gigantomachia. The only group that undergoes gigantomachia more regularly than humans are orcs, who are themselves descended from giants.
Humans are the type of humanoid with the easiest time reproducing with other varieties of humanoid person. As a result half-humans are the most common variety of mixed lineage person, and they often act as vectors for bringing human traits into other populations. The reverse is also true, as half-humans who live within human communities introduce traits from other lineages into the human genome. This has resulted in an increase in the variety of features in populations of humans, and sometimes traits from an ancestral lineage can go unexpressed for generations of humans. A human whose ears end with a slight point might have an elven ancestor, and the number of generations back that ancestor was has little to no effect on when the trait might appear in their human descendants.
HISTORY AND CULTURE
Humans are one of the oldest known varieties of humanoid. Multiple accounts from across the world dictate that ancestral humans were present when the Cataclysm began and that they took shelter from the demonic hordes in fortified locations, many of which were underground. Such sanctuaries seem to have existed across the entire planet, which has directly led to modern humans being found on every known continent.
This has also led to humans overall being a very disparate people. The human populations of any given continent may descend from ancestors who emerged from the same sanctuary, but every region’s humans have vastly differing histories and legends based on their ancestors unique struggles within their own sanctuaries and unique encounters since emerging in the Reborn World. Human culture therefore varies wildly by regional population, with little uniting separate human groups spread across the entire planet.
There are a few common elements across differing human cultures, however, one being a societal friction with giants. The eldest giants predate the Cataclysm and have given accounts of fighting against the invading armies of demons that ended the world. Many giants view humans as cowardly for their ancestors hiding in their sanctuaries rather than assisting in defending the world, a view mirrored by the giants’ own orcish descendants. In turn humans have blamed the giants for causing the Cataclysm; the elder giants were alive at the time and were unable to stop the event from happening in the first place.
There are some human communities that hold a view of human superiority, stemming from human legends that their ancestors took shelter in their sanctuaries to become “the inheritors of the future”. For this reason some modern humans believe the world to belongs to them by birthright, and communities that hold these views do not embrace people of other lineages, even going so far as to spurn humans with ancestral traits from other lineages.
These groups tend to be in the minority however, most human communities will ally with others to share commerce, resources, and ideas. This has caused many human cities to become commercial hubs, for better and for worse.

Author’s Notes
I worked for a long time trying to figure out something interesting for humans. The thing I was fixated on is how normal humans tend to succeed despite lacking unique supernatural adaptations in fantasy stories. They roll up and overcome the odds with a plan held together on prayers and audacity. How does one translate that into the game?
I feel human characters tend to pull this off in one of two ways. One is being skilled, using their expertise and wit to overcome situations they otherwise couldn’t. So I gave them more skills and expertise than any of my planned reworks for lineages.
The other way is a unique talent for getting themselves into and out of trouble. This is…hard to quantify. But other lineages have unique powers or constant advantage at specific things, so I decided to give humans a way to gain advantage on anything but only a limited number of times.
I’m definitely curious to see how the community responds to this idea, so feedback is greatly appreciated!
