Invisible Lightning: Fast Facts

Invisible Lightning: Fast Facts

All electricity is technically invisible. This is because electric current is made of moving electrons, and electrons cannot be detected by the human eye. This is why you can’t see the current running through an electric fence for example.

When you see lightning or electric sparks, what you’re actually seeing is what happens when electricity passes through air. Electric current leaves a lot of energy within the air it passes through, and the energized air briefly turns into plasma, which emits light.
